12 reasons why a professional writer can help your business to shine.
So, do you think you can write? The chances are you probably can. But whether you can write well (or as well as a professional writer) is another thing. Would you do your own dentistry and fix a filling that was creating havoc in your mouth? I mean, you could, but I doubt you would. I’m pretty sure you’d head to the dentist and let the professional sort out the issue.
It’s a strange analogy, but the same can apply to your business content. So, should you be writing it yourself or outsourcing to a writing professional (it’s the latter, by the way!). There are many reasons why you should let an experienced copy or content writer create your content, so let’s get started.
1 – It’s what a professional writer does!
Back to the dentist example, there may be many things you’re good at and others that you need to place into someone else’s hands. For example, professional writers have been writing for others for X amount of time and therefore have crafted their skills, practised their trade and learnt many specific techniques and tricks along the way.
I would cringe now if I had to read the first few blogs I ever wrote because, quite simply, I didn’t know what I was doing. I know I missed key aspects of blog writing.
For example, I didn’t know anything about SEO techniques (I probably didn’t even know what it stood for) or keywords. As a result, I lacked experience and ideas and possibly created a few disastrous blogs. But time, practice and training have given me a depth of writing skills, and I have written across various channels.
2 – Focus on the YOU
Many businesses make a rookie mistake when they write their business content; they talk about themselves. They say what they can offer and why they’re brilliant. Which is good, right? Actually, no. Your customers or potential customers want you to solve a problem for them, and you need to hit them quickly with how you can do this. Professional writers know how to appeal to their needs and use YOU language.
3 – A professional writer is familiar with various content types
If you’ve read my blog about the differences between copywriters and content writers, you’ll know that there are many forms of content, including blogs, white papers, case studies, emails, newsletters etc. As a professional writer, I have a breadth of experience across these channels. Therefore I know when they might be relevant or can suggest what might be better for your business.
In addition, we understand how to formant different content types, so can offer you the finished product rather than you having to teach yourself!
4 – There’s a consistency to your brand messaging
You have a logo to make you stand out and use across your business products and services to be recognisable and consistent. Your content also needs to be consistent. That applies to your tone of voice, language and straplines. A professional writer will offer that; it’s part of our job. You need to know that your social media posts will sound like your website tone of voice etc.
5 – A professional writer captures attention
Well, that’s a relief, because it’s our job after all. Copywriters use language that attracts customers and grabs their attention, and it’s not easy to do yourself. We understand the importance of hard-hitting headlines, concise sentences and superb calls to action.
Once we know your business and intentions, we can use the right words to speak to your target market, engage potential customers, increase sales and enhance your reputation. So, why do all that yourself if you can hire a writer to do it for you?
6 – You’ll save time
It’s a no brainer, isn’t it? You hand over your content needs, and we get writing to free up your time. All I need is an initial call when we first ‘meet’, and then I can get on with the writing. As a professional writer, I can work from your roughly worded notes or bullet points or edit and restructure your existing content. We’re used to working with very little information and turning it into a masterpiece!
7 – A professional writer doesn’t get writers’ block
That’s a bold statement! However, we’re trained to write, and I imagine most of us write for a living because we love it. That’s not to say I haven’t ever sat and stared at a blank screen and longed for some inspiration to arrive, but most times, I know what needs to be done because a client has given me a thorough brief. Once I speak to the client and understand their focus, objectives and timeframes, I love to get writing.
8 – You might put writing off
I confess I leave my accounting tax returns to the last minute. My accountant has to chase me because I don’t enjoy doing it. The same can be said about writing; I know many business owners who have a list of writing projects or changes they want to make but never get around to doing it. That’s why professional writers are on hand, because we have the time to do your writing, and you can crack on and run your business.
9 – An obsession with spelling and grammar
Well, for me anyway. I know that isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I sadly enjoy checking content for errors as a professional writer. I will spell check and do a grammar review on all the work I write for clients or can do the same for existing content you have in place (and I can make suggestions). Unfortunately, not every business owner has the time or inclination to do it themselves.
10 – A professional writer has ideas (and lots of them!)
We can create a content strategy to fit your business. For example, when I work with clients and get to know them and their business, it becomes easier to understand what they might need content-wise. Therefore, I am always happy to suggest ideas for blog subjects or ways in which different types of content could be used for advertising, sales conversions or information sharing.
11 – There’s no risk of plagiarism
Absolutely spot on. It’s the Holy Grail of being a professional writer, do not use other people’s work or words as your own. It’s our job to create original content that hooks the reader or client. Copy and pasting someone else’s words is a big no-no.
12 – You can sleep at night!
No more worrying about the blog you should have written or why your website isn’t helping you sell. Once you hire the right professional writer for your business, you can sleep soundly safe in the knowledge that they’re the ones losing sleep over the right words while you’re deep in slumber.
So there you go. It makes sense, doesn’t it? You hand over your hopes and dreams for your content and a professional writer turns the ideas into a word-perfect reality. You free up time to get on with your business and let the word challenges disrupt someone else’s sleep!
